Link and Lerke, by Bernd Schuchter (Austria)
Translated by Rachel Hildebrandt

lerkepod6Link and Lerke takes place in Hohenems, the most important Jewish community in the Austrian/ Swiss border during the Nazi period, now extinct. Only a local Jewish Museum remains, with its collection consisting of pieces bought from gentiles who, somehow, ended up in their possession. It is a moving report of how the Jewish identity was erased by the Nazis, seen from a personal point of view.
Bernd Schuchter has an intriguing way of mixing fiction with accurate historical research, achieving a very effective result, in a deep, emotional report about time and memory. Some real characters are featured in the plot, like the Swiss commander Paul Grüninger, for example.
The original German version was published by Edition Laurin, Innsbruck University Press, and the translation was sponsored by the Austrian Ministry of Culture.
